 Defending Your Faith

Faith & Convictions

Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.

Statement of Faith

The Master's Seminary has a comprehensive Statement of Faith that I have studied at length, subscribe to without reservation, and do fully support. This is our guiding doctrinal position in all matters of faith and practice.

Although I often reference the Master's Seminary Statement of Faith and the Master's Seminary Journal, I did not attend the Master's Seminary.  I wish I had.
Social Justice and Religious Liberty and Concerns

Peter instructs his audience to submit to and respect their governing authorities, despite the horrid conditions they were experiencing. He stated that God has ordained governments to restrain evil in the world and to promote good, and believers are to live in a way that is above reproach. However, as citizens primarily of God’s kingdom, Christians are to obey God above all other rulers and authorities, whatever the cost.

In the United States, religious liberty is under attack in many areas of public life. Religious freedom begins with God, as He gives all people the freedom to choose whether or not to follow Him. Government does not exist to promote or suppress religion, but to protect the free exercise of it. Government does not have the right to redefine Freedom of Religion to mean only the private worship of God in one’s home or church. True worship of God is faithfulness to God in all areas of life.

Christians are to obey their government and those in authority over them, until that obedience requires disobedience to God. Barack Hussein Obama II  through executive action, along with Demoncratic legislation and court rulings over the last eight years has redefined for this nation and its people:

  • The Basis of Law.
  • The Origin of Life.
  • The Definition of Life.
  • The Definition of Morality.
  • The Definition of Marriage.
  • The Definition of Biological Gender.
  • The Definition of The Right of Parents.
  • The Definition of The Right of Public Worship.
  • The Definition of America as No Longer A Christian Nation.
  • The Definition of The Original Intent of Our Founding Fathers.
  • The Definition of The Right of Sincerely Held Religious Convictions.

Although we recognize both as authorities, God is The Supreme Authority. We are to honor Him in all our ways both privately and publicly. Therefore, we must use what remains of our religious liberty for His mission of saving the lost and making disciples. To that end, we will not bow to Caesar, nor remain silent.

“The basic problem of the Christians in this country in the last eighty years or so, in regard to society and in regard to government, is that they have seen things in bits and pieces instead of totals.”   Francis A. SchaefferA Christian Manifesto

Essential Convictions

  • Fruit In Evangelism Is Impossible Apart From The Sovereign Intervention Of The Holy Spirit.

    • All men are born radically depraved, at enmity with God, restraining and suppressing the truth of God in unrighteousness. Romans 1:18-32

    • We are to take God's appraisal of the unbeliever's condition over our appraisal of their condition. Ephesians 4:17-19

    • Man cannot autonomously choose to become a Christian. God alone can change a heart and make them into a new creation that is called a "Christian".
    • The conversion of a man is an absolute impossibility apart from the sovereign intervention of the Holy Spirit in the regeneration of an individual.

    • God has chosen both the means as well as the end, and we are the means. There is no plan "B". We are the means God has chosen for reaching the lost.

    • Therefore, we are to spend our lives advancing His kingdom, on His terms, to His glory. Or, die trying. That's as simple as it is. We are to make disciples.

  • Fruit In Apologetics Is Impossible Apart From The Sovereign Vivification Of God's Word By The Holy Spirit.

    • All men are born radically depraved, at enmity with God, restraining and suppressing the truth of God in unrighteousness. Romans 1:18-32

    • We are to take God's appraisal of the unbeliever's condition and needs over our appraisal of their condition and needs. Ephesians 4:17-19

    • Our goal in apologetics is to see the unbeliever come to belief (faith, trust, confidence) that is, to saving faith in Jesus Christ through His Word.

    • Understanding the nature and process of saving faith will dictate the method of our apologetic argumentation to achieve saving faith. 1 Cor 2:4-5

    • Saving faith begins with the conviction that God's Word is more trustworthy than human wisdom. That they can trust in the Lord with all their heart!
    • Therefore, we argue for the veracity and trustworthiness of God's Word, and its epistemic authority over vain intellectual autonomy and understanding.

  • Fruit Is A Blessing From God. According to Jesus, it is through fervent prayer that we bear much fruit and so prove to be His disciples John 15:7-8, 16. Fruit is a blessing from God. Its continued absence in the life of a believer should be of grave concern. Matthew 7:16 We don't all harvest, but we are all called to labor in the field, to persevere, to fulfill the task assigned to us by God. For everything there's a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. Ecc 3:1 Let us bear much fruit. Let us not be trees with just leaves and no fruit. Jesus cursed superficial religion. He cursed profession without practice. He cursed singing songs without surrendering our life. This King desires—and deserves—more than hollow worship and hypocritical religion. Let us bear much fruit in keeping with our faith that Christ might receive the full reward of His suffering.

An Effective Ambassador For Christ Demonstrates Three Essential Attributes:

    Knowledge, Wisdom, Character

"I am an Ambassador for Jesus Christ.
I can explain precisely what that means,
and I can clearly defend my conviction in the truth of Christianity
in an attractive manner that commends the message."
    Greg Koukl

        • The Scriptures Are Inerrant, Sufficient, And Authoritative. The Scriptures are the standard for our doctrine, ethics, and ministry. In this, we mean that the Scriptures are not only inspired and infallible, but they are also sufficient. They are all that is needed so that the man of God may be adequate, fully equipped for every good work. II Timothy 3:16-17. In our desire to fulfill 1 Peter 3:15 and Matthew 28:18-20, we will employ only those means, strategies, and methodologies which are afforded us in Scripture. The more we stray from the biblical standard and rely upon our own ingenuity or cleverness, the less we will see of the power of God and the advancement of His kingdom. It is a contradiction to employ unbiblical means to defend and propagate biblical truth. It is dangerous to employ any means not warranted by Scripture to fulfill the tasks Scripture has assigned to us. Scripture is our authority and rule.

        • The Grammatical-Historical Hermeneutic (Interpretation of Scripture) Rules Here. We hold that the Word of God is an objective, propositional revelation 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Corinthians 2:13, verbally inspired in every word 2 Timothy 3:16, absolutely inerrant in the original documents, infallible, and God breathed. We hold that the grammatical-historical interpretation of Scripture affirms creation in six literal days Genesis 1:31; Exodus 31:17.

        • Scripture Is The Basis For Our Apologetic Method. Proverbs 26:4-5, Matthew 22:1-14, Acts 22:1, Acts 23:1, Acts 26:32, along with 1 Peter 3:15.

          • Prayer Is An Absolute Necessity. This impossible work can only be accomplished through the sovereign transforming power and wisdom of God. Therefore, prayer must be at the forefront of all our endeavors. The Lord’s Prayer shows the absolute necessity of our prayers: “Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” Matthew 6:9-10. We are to pray for co-laborers. Matthew 9:37-38 Open doors. Colossians 4:3 Clarity and boldness to defend and proclaim the Gospel. Colossians 4:4; Acts 4:29-30 All the apologetic and evangelistic training, strategies, zealous activities in the world cannot compensate for prayerlessness. Apologetics and evangelism advance through fervent, relentless prayer.

            • The True Gospel Must Be Proclaimed. The Gospel is the power of God for salvation. Romans 1:16 The Gospel is the great “means” and “methodology” of God's work on Earth. The Gospel is, first and foremost, God in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. II Corinthians 5:19 It answers the question of how a just God can justify wicked, sinful men. Romans 3:26 It points to Christ alone! Who bore the sins of His people upon the cross, and was crushed under the full weight of God's wrath against our sin. The Good News of the Gospel is that Christ’s death fully satisfied the justice of God, providing salvation for His people. Romans 4:25 By raising Jesus from the dead – God displayed forever His acceptance of the substitutionary payment for our sin through the cross..

            • The Gospel Must Be Proclaimed As The Objective Public Truth Of God. The Gospel is the power of God for salvation Romans 1:16 The preaching of the Gospel is the great “means” and “methodology” of God's salvific work on Earth. It is the truth of God to everyone whether they believe or reject His Son. To try to evangelize in a post-Christian world without apologetics affirming the truthfulness and trustworthiness of God's Word, will be no more effective than trying to move an unbeliever to belief through an apologetical argument without evangelism. You need both working together synergistically bearing witness to the truthfulness and trustworthiness of God's Word when it indicts then for their rebellion against God, and then, when it presents God's great love for them in offering His Son as a substitutionary sacrifice for their sin. Unless these positions represent objective truth, there's no contrition and repentance. Truth is important. For this purpose was I born and for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.  John 18:37 I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 The Truth is on our side.
            • What is Jesus worth to you?
Do you believe that Jesus is worth everything? Do you believe what He said is true? David Platt does, and so do we. This is one of our core convictions.

            • Superficial Evangelism Damages The Credibility Of The Gospel. Witnessing with foolish gospel gimmicks plays right into the hands of our adversary. An unbeliever already considers us to be foolish. Confirming that fact is a poor segue into the most sober and serious issue in all of life, their eternal destiny. Substituting carnal foolishness in place of the eternal weight and gravity that salvation rightly deserves is foreign to scripture.

            • Accepting Jesus. Inviting people to "accept Jesus" is no substitute for a biblical call to repentance and faith in Jesus. The question is not if they will accept Jesus on their terms, rather, whether Jesus will accept them on his terms. Biblical assurance of salvation does not flow from a past decision, but a transformed life. Meaning, from the examination of one’s enduring lifestyle of following Jesus Christ as Lord in the light of Scripture. There should be some evidence of a continuing sanctification process toward Christlikeness in the life of a true believer.

              • Apologetics And Evangelism Is Very Costly. Amy Carmichael explained that missions is no more and no less than an opportunity to die. We live in a fallen world at enmity with God opposing His truth at every turn. Therefore, witnessing for Christ and suffering with Christ go hand-in-hand. Advancement of the kingdom of God into the darkness of Satan's dominion will be met with fierce warfare. There are times and places where martyrdom is unavoidable.

What Is The Chief End Of Man?
Man's chief end is to glorify God, and enjoy him forever.

What Rule Has God Given To Direct Us How We May Glorify And Enjoy Him?
The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New testaments,
is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy him.
